If I comment on a work, it's because I want to support your work and you, the artist.

I comment only if I can think of something specific to say about it. If I don't comment on some piece or other, it's because I don't have anything to say except "Oooo, awesome!!!" or "I don't like it", and no one wants either of those comments.

If something really makes my eyes bug out though, I might just gush without detailing specifics. I figure if I'm really really impressed I should let the artist know even if I can't say exactly why.

I only critique if it's asked for, and even then I only critique pieces that are within my own skill range. I can't critique people well above my own skill level because I can't see the mistakes (duh) and I don't critique people well below my level because I don't know where to start and I might end up looking mean.

Also note that I am not the best art critic. I haven't taken an art class in years and feel weird using formal art terms like "negative space" and such...I might end up not using them right.

I'm interested in all kinds of art, but since I'm only experienced drawing cartoons I can't critique art that isn't cartoons. I still give non-critical comments though.

Just because I try to give comments that people will like, doesn't mean I'll feel sorry for you if you get a comment you don't like. And by that I mean I won't be chewing out commenters with "Oh stop saying mean things about [deviant's] art!!!!" comments. I just won't say anything, or if you're my friend and you're visibly upset I'll reassure you in private. No RL gallery or publisher is going to protect you against outspoken spectators, why should online galleries do so?

If I favorite a piece, it's because I want to be able to go back and look at it whenever I want, because it's done something for me that no other piece has. It has nothing to do with supporting the piece or you, the artist. It's all about me. I usually leave a comment if I fave something, but it might be a gushy comment.
